FOO

With the Roady tuned to Classic Rock, we took a direct route from Lewiston, Idaho to San Carlos. We followed the Snake River south out of Lewiston. Then, we cut through eastern Oregon which was mostly high desert. We flew by the eastern side (skimming through Nevada) of the Warner Mountains and into California.

Bruce found an amazing fly-in ranch on top one of the hills above the Snake River with a lake, house, barn, hay barn and airstrip. He circled it. It was beautiful, but it did not pass the milk test.

It was a clear day with scattered clouds. Bruce flew at about the level of the broken cloud layer and dogged them as we flew. There's an old pilot's saying that clouds are filled with aluminum. Since you cannot see into a cloud, assume there's another plane inside of it, and avoid them.

It was clear across the Central Valley with fog starting to come into the Bay Area along the coastal mountains and into the Golden Gate gap. Bruce timed our flight well to come in after the morning fog burned off and before the afternoon fog rolled in.

Once on the ground, unpacked, and the plane put away, we had a late lunch at our favorite local greasy spoon, the Sky Kitchen restaurant at the airport, as they closed. The smell of fried food hung in the air. Tuna melts with fries. It was not peanut butter and jam, but pretty good none the less. I did not eat all of mine, but Bruce cleaned his plate. I was pleased to see just how thoroughly they scrubbed their grill. When we arrived home, I went shopping for fresh bread and milk then made myself half a peanut butter and jam sandwich and started to eat it.

Bruce said, "We just ate a huge meal. What are you eating?"

I held up my now quarter of a sandwich, "I've been craving one of these since Kitty Hawk."

"Peanut butter and jelly? You could have gotten that anywhere," he advised.

"Not like this," I continued, "Alvarado whole grain bread, Adam's crunchy peanut butter and Kim's homemade jam." Bruce laughed.  Nothing like a little taste of home.
